I did a similar thing a couple years ago, sans photographs.

I used a recreational GPS and a cheapy Nokia cell phone.  It was a  
manual process,
entering in all the digits of the coordinates into a text message,  
then sending it to an email address.  When received by the mail  
server, a bash/perl script processed the text message, which generated  
maps and text for my blog.

I'd like to hear what you come up with.  Integrating photographs  
automatically sounds like a lot of fun, and one that I would enjoy  
playing with.
