So, when do I get my IPhone with GPS/Gmaps and can dispense with my separate pod, phone, and nav system? Should Garmin be worried? Is the nav system of the near future 100% gmap/VE? Sorry, but I imagine Javascript is here to stay. What is wrong with this scenario (besides G owning the world...)

As a response to the 3g slam, I use 3g UMTS here in Spain (a dongle on my laptop), and it is great. I use it everywhere instead of adsl, costs 60 euros a month for 5GB as opposed to 40 euros for adsl. I haven't managed to go over 4GB. "Any day" Vodafone is upgrading Granada to HSDPA for >1mbps down, 350k up.
