[Geowanking] Elevation Database

Hey Wankers,

What's your favorite way to (efficiently) store and (quickly) query (very)
large amounts of elevation data?

Right off the top of my head, one way is to store elevation profiles as 3D
lines in postgis, but that strikes me as kludgey. How would you do it?
