My garmin geko 201 is frustrating that way although I love how small it
is; I'd throw it in my pack and after a days hiking find out that it had
run out of batteries. I find they usually last 8 to 12 hours. The pack
weight of carrying a bunch of batteries is also not insignificant.
Nevertheless it has saved me once or twice. One time I was returning from
a day hike up a peak in tongariro in white out snow conditions and it
helped me stay on track; another time I dropped a petzl led headlight
while random walking around some cave entrances in an alpine meadow in the
rockies and it helped me find that gear again... which otherwise would
have meant curtailing the trip...
