[Geowanking] GeoSkating/GeoSailing : alternative maps needed

Hi,

I am seeking an alternative map background for my two tracing/mapping 
projects: http://www.geoskating.com and recently http://www.geosailing.com

The local mapping institution in The Netherlands now forced me to remove 
all the maps before sept 11 (sic!). And yes, legally they are right. And 
yes, I am aware of the issues getting free map data outside the US.

I was just wondering if there is any other type of map/imagery I could 
legally use. Satellite images would be ok for the time being similar to 
OpenStreetMap. Can anyone point me to a source preferably a 
web/REST-service ? Thanks in advance,
