OSM's not a car-focused design. Its key/value system is intended for exactly
what you describe when you say "tracklogs could be marked as road, trail, or
various".

For example, Nick Whitelegg is intending to use its data as the basis for his
Freemap project (www.free-map.org.uk), which focuses on walking routes in the
countryside; Freemap was originally set up with its own mapping. And I've got a
bunch of canal and river tracklogs which would be of use to another site
entirely but also relevant to OSM.
