Hi,
A couple of days ago I said that GML was too complicated (from a newbie
perspective). James McGill countered that I should look at the 2.1.2 spec.
So I did. Here is a sample schema referencing GML 2.1.2 for doing simple
interchange of google maps / virtual earth style data, basically markers,
routing, and the associated meta data. It's not complete by any stretch of
the imagination but does validate. I have added some extra bits that I find
interesting.
http://placeshare.org/xml/simplemaplayer.xsd
and
http://placeshare.org/xml/simpletext.xml (FF will actually attempt to render
the XML for some reason so look at the source)
I suppose I should back up and explain what I am trying to accomplish. I am
trying to understand the simplest way to get people to start sharing map
layers (and what standards I should use in building my own tools). I want
joe random web user to be able to create a map of his favorite places and
overlay that on the crime data for his neighborhood, I want to overlay
google siteseeing with my plans for a family vacation, etc etc. From what I
can grok from the open tools it seems like a good bit of this should be
possible using WFS (I just haven't figured it out yet). In the back of my
mind it seems like the biggest challenge is taking the good yet simple bits
developed by the GIS pros and refashioning them for the wider (yet less
sophisticated) web community.
