Hi,

I recently joined this list. Since a few months I've started a project 
called GeoSkating. See all details on http://www.geoskating.com

Basically GeoSkating is about automatic map-making for skaters through 
GPS+Mobile where GPS-data is enriched with road-surface ratings and 
multimedia bound to GPS-locations. There's also live-tracking. The 
project is still under development in all aspects. e.g. (DHTML) 
map-navigation is still a bit rough and there are more layers to be 
unlocked.

One of the features I have been sort of hacking ;-) is map-provision. 
Reading some stuff about Google/Yahoo APIs I am wondering if/how/from 
where I can use free/low fee GIS map data for the "bottom layer" or 
maybe even run a MapServer (UM?). Since you are all more deeper into 
this area I would be pleased with any suggestions (directly or through 
this list).
