Yeah, even with projection differences, those maps were not produced
from aerial photos. So when you try to get them to line up with
modern maps, they just don't. They did a damn good job given the
technology of the day, but there's no substitute for working off
aerial photos.

Well, one of the things I want to add to mapview is the ability to
click on the modern map, and then click on the historic map in the
same place. Do that to get a handful of reference points, and then
click in the four corners of the historic map to get the bounding box
information.
Tedious, yes, but you'd only have to do it once.
